Gathering with the Waitaha in New Zealand
By Mayte Abad Morente
First of all, I want to say THANK YOU from the deepest part of my heart to all the BEINGS which have made possible this incredible meeting. Thanks to my Higher Self, always guiding me so patiently, to Papatuanuku (Mother Earth) for being our "playground", to Rangi (Father Sky) always taking care, to my dearest brother Drunvalo just for being himself and for his incredible work in all levels, to my dearest sister Diane for her warmth and strength which is always working with the heart for the highest good of all of us, to my dearest Waitaha Family, specially Rita and Taheke for allowing me to share their home, special thanks to my beloved Ruth, Hirini and Ojasvin, to all the people in the kitchen and Security and from other Maraes, to all the people from different countries who met there, ones from the previous journey and new ones, to Donna and the people at Tui Retreat for taking me in, to the people of Spirit of Maat for their wonderful work, to Norma Gentile my friend who is always supporting me, to all the people, to all Life Everywhere.
I arrived in Auckland on 7th of August and Donna Daring was waiting for me to bring me to her Retreat, receiving me with a warm welcome. I felt so blessed for meeting her again. She took care of me and the next day brought me to the Hotel, so all the group could travel by buses to the Marae (a building for meetings) where the Grandmothers and Grandfathers where waiting to welcome us.
We were, at that moment, about 120 people from 36 countries... I met some people from the previous journey, back in 2007, and my heart was full of joy. And I met new ones with the same feeling of meeting old family. I could not stop crying, the love was coming out of me as tears of joy.
We received our welcome home from the Waitaha and Maori people, and we listened to their words and songs, then we started to sing just sounds: A, E, I, O, U learning the principle of sound. Then when all of us (travellers from different countries) wanted to be joined to express our love, we use to sing the sound "A" in different pitches, and it became our "cricket song".
Drunvalo said to us that if we recorded the sound of a cricket and then we reproduce it so slow, and if we recorded human people singing the sound "A" and reproduce it faster (there was a right speed for doing it) you cannot distinguish between the cricket or human sound. So this was our particular joke during the gathering.
We spent several days in Aotearoa and I don?t pretend to make a diary of things, I only wish to share with you some of what I learnt and of what I felt.
The first thing I saw, was the incredible wisdom and love that Waitaha people have. The first day Te Porohau said to us that we have no program, that we can forget about any previous program because we were so many people and it was impossible to follow a program, but I know they did this on purpose, trying to help us to forget about expectations and the mind. They were trying to show us how to look inside ourselves and follow our inner voices, instead of following a program, a teacher, or whatever from outside.
It was hard for many of us. The simple thing of not having a program is unusual for the western mind. We need to know what we have to do, we need to know what the next step is, and someone needs to tell us all this. So some people were very disappointed, confused, and even angry.
I could see that Te Porohau was performing a role, attracting the attention to himself, so that the Grandmothers and Grandfathers and other people could perform their roles safety. I know that the Grandmothers foresaw some kind of trouble or danger and they were trying hard to keep a Sacred Place of safety, and of course, they were always available for anyone who needed to speak with them. But you had to take the first step.
The Waitaha people in their invitation, asked to us to bring all our stuff with us to Aotearoa (this is what the Maori call New Zealand, Aotearoa; The land of the big white cloud) to share with them. I think that many of us carried all our stuff, but some of us, instead of sharing it, sometimes throw it away on the land. So the stuff came out in the shape of anger, confusion, delusion, judgement, etc. But the stuff also came out as joy, singing, love, laughing, and tenderness. It was a time not of judgment or rejection; it was a time of integration, sitting with and releasing energies. Maybe the "money issue" came out strongly because it is a very rejected, desired, and misunderstood energy.
We had the wonderful chance to face our own reflections. For each one of us it was different. I think that everyone faced the things they needed to face in order to keep growing. For me was very enlightening to see that the family I was looking for in Aotearoa, this feeling of belonging somewhere, I already have in Spain. I have a wonderful family (not as big as Waitaha people have), we are close and we help each other. I love my land, my little village, and my country.
Sometimes I have felt like a bird in a cage here in Spain, mostly like a fish out of the water… but it was just a wrong way of perceiving my situation. Being in Aotearoa for almost a month helped me to open my mind to the same size of my heart. I forgot to appreciate the beautiful mind I already have, as I kept trying to silence it, so my mind played with me till I listened to it too as I listen to my heart. I still have issues to process, to release and to evolve, like everyone, each one at their own level. But I have learned to trust in my inner voice and in my own experience. Each one has a unique way to experience things and sometimes, this way it is not alike to the others.
The Waitaha say that they are not teachers, that they are humans too, and that they are only sharing with us. I think that all of us are teachers and students at the same time, and that there is information at so many levels, even in our words. For example, in Maori the word "I" means center and masculine, "O" means circle, feminine, and the word "IO" means God and creation (you can keep seeing the relation and inter-relationship between words and sound). "A" means enter in (enter in the sacred space of creation). The word "AIO" means peace. But the sound "A" also means mother (you use this sound to enter in the sacred heart of the mother), while the sound "O" means father, and the sound "I" means the inner child. So again "AIO" means peace. In this way when the Maori say AIO, they are saying peace, but they are giving you a lot of information about the concept they have of peace. And the same thing happens in all languages, maybe not in a way so evident and strong, but sometimes we are simply not aware.
You can keep learning so much about words and concepts in Maori, and the relationship between sounds and words. Another example is "Tahi", which is the word for number "one". "Ta" comes from "Tane", male, and "Hi" comes from "Hine" woman. You can see the pattern.
We slept together in the Marae, side by side, we ate together, and we spent a lot of time together singing, talking, sharing, hugging, laughing, and crying. At some point, Te Porohau, the Grandmothers and Grandfathers, and even Drunvalo were "missing". I know that they were doing their "job" as everyone else was, but for some people it was "terrible". So Ruth, Hirini and Ojasvin asked their Higher Selves for help, and with their permission, they helped the group to remain unified, and to balance the energies. They did an incredible job. We did Haka (Ha: breath, life; Ka: ignite, fire) the traditional dance of Maori, we did Waka (Waka is the canoe) across the Universe, and we connected with our different lands and mountains. I think we healed and released a lot of energies from ourselves and our places.
I was so lucky to be surrounded by and sharing with awesome people. You could feel how the love in their hearts was so big that it comes out through their eyes. And the children…you cannot even imagine what beautiful angels were with us. I remember so well drawing and painting with them, playing soccer or whatever. Children from Maori, children from Ireland, children from Russia, children from Italy, children from Japan, children from Germany, children from Switzerland. There were children from all over the world. But you know the funny thing? The funny thing is that all of us are children, children of Ranginui (Father Sky) and Papatuanuuku (Mother Earth) dreaming together for a new beautiful world, a beautiful life.
We are a FAMILY, brothers and sisters, some older, some younger but we work, sleep, and dream together, side by side surrounded by Life Love.
Aroha nui (the biggest unconditional love)
