The Search for Initiation

By Stephen Thomson

"There is a Path that leads to that which is known as Initiation and through Initiation to the Perfecting of Man."
Annie Besant

The natural progression of life, as spiritual people, is to a place where we finally understand that every aspect of being and all of life is a spiritual experience. With this understanding comes a subset of knowing — that most of the steps along the path are paved by initiation. And in our community, initiation is something all of us are seeking. It is the one step we pursue, because we know that with it comes an irrevocable change on a soul level. In an instant we are changed forever. Vibration shifts and our energy becomes are more refined. And at this point in our journey, we embody a more purified personal energy. We are open and more receptive to the subtle energy of the Universe. In turn, we blend more fully with the one that is the all.

A wide variety of initiations has existed for centuries and is a part of life in spiritual communities. There are initiations for birth, coming into adulthood, being partnered and even transition to another plane upon death. There are also the types of initiation we actively seek — the ones that transfer spiritual energy and power into our being. An example of this is the initiations of The Mystery School Tradition of Egypt. Here, an initiate studies the teachings and is then presented with a series of tests. The examination determines how well the teachings have been learned and integrated, not only into daily life, but also on a soul level. The initiate is tested for spiritual and moral strength, rather than intellectual and physical. By passing the test of an initiation results in advancement, and gaining access to the next level of teachings. The desired result is achieved — a deeper connection with the Cosmic.

In our daily lives, there is a more frequent and recognizable form of initiation, that happens as a part of each passing day. In our nature and universe, we are always searching for and moving forward. The loss of a job, the end of a relationship, even illness is an example of the type of initiation we encounter on a daily basis. These are the tests along the way that help change our view of life and enable us to focus more completely on the true goals of our spiritual life. In short, we find out what is really important to us. At times feeling powerless because of the challenges of everyday life, we come face-to-face with our personal power in relationship to the awesome and infinite Universe. We turn the corner in knowing our will does not always serve our higher good.

Then there are times we actively set up the energy for an initiation to happen. Our consciousness, acting on a soul impulse, suggests that change is necessary and a vital part of our continued growth. First, energy accumulates to support our advancement and then an opportunity presents itself for an initiation occurs. In contrast to other life events, there are times we are not aware of what we are doing or what we have done that results in initiation happening. Initiation can also come about through a formalized approach or, administered through spiritual ceremonies. Each of these ways represents an ending or beginning — the start or the finish. Either way, initiation is a time of pausing, looking at how far we have come and a gathering of energy to support our next step.

Mastering a set of techniques for the purposes of growth, healing and soul growth is the hallmark of an initiatic experience. One of the ways of approaching 2012 and the earth changes can include an active search for initiation. The Flower of Life, for example, is a study of action we can take that leads to initiation. The teachings are about reconnecting the physical and psychic bodies to higher dimensions of our universe. Another way is that in almost every corner of the world, there are indigenous groups who welcome non-members into their ceremonies. In the United States there are opportunities to participate in Sweat Lodges in every state. Or we can search out and join some organization that has a process of initiation. For example, Self- Realization Fellowship — a worldwide spiritual movement based on the teaching of Paramahansa Yogananda, offers a series of initiations as a part of their studies.

Another idea is having the opportunity to travel and study with Drunvalo. It seems that everywhere he goes in the world; people are sharing their sacred teachings with him and to those who travel with him. In the very core to these ancient traditions is the basic experience of initiation. The formula is in place — a mystical- spiritual site, the elders are there to pass on the tradition, and lives are transformed by the energy. Dru's work continues to present these opportunities for anyone who is interested in growing. The very essence of what he does, and how he moves around the world, is a good example of ways to consciously enter into situations that will guarantee intuition.

Seeking out as many experiences to actively participate in some form of initiation will help us to come into harmony and integrate the changing vibrations of the planet within our bodies. There is incredible value to our mind-body-soul matrix to be active during this time — stepping up and welcoming change and what the energy of this age has to offer. On the other hand, to be inactive and resistant can result in a whole variety of experiences, the least of which being missed opportunity for soul growth. What we can be certain of is we have chosen to reincarnate and be present on the planet at this time. Doesn't it make sense to be present for the gifts contained in the unfolding of this energy?

There is one last point deserving our attention and consideration on the topic of initiation. The core of our belief is based on unity. We are all one — one energy — one people — one planet and one universe. So if we change, so does all of humankind, our planet in which we live and the universe. In a sense, we have an obligation to do something, no matter how big or small, in ushering in the era. By far the most important steps we can take rests in our willingness to step forward and experience initiation. The actual experience when we have the chance to fully participate in shifting our consciousness and by affect the world in which we live.
